NetSuite is moving to SuiteScript 2.1: What you need to know
Are you using NetSuite with customizations in your system? If so, now is the time to start reviewing your SuiteScripts.
Oracle is modernizing the technology behind NetSuite and gradually transitioning to SuiteScript 2.1.
This means that some of your existing scripts may need to be updated, modified, or rewritten. By starting early, you can gain better control over the scope of work, costs, and resources required.
Why is NetSuite transitioning to SuiteScript 2.1?
SuiteScript is used to customize and automate functionality in NetSuite. This can include order management, invoicing, validation processes, or transferring information between different systems.
The transition introduces a more modern technical platform with improved security, a more efficient execution engine with the potential for better performance, and support for future functionality. This makes the upgrade an important step in taking advantage of NetSuite’s continued development.
By NetSuite 2028.2, existing scripts must be upgraded to SuiteScript 2.1.
When do you need to take action?
Oracle is implementing the transition in stages:
2027.1: NetSuite support for SuiteScript 1.0 will be limited to critical issues.
2028.1: Scripts written in SuiteScript 2.0 and scripts labeled 2.x will run as SuiteScript 2.1 by default.
2028.2: All new and existing scripts must use SuiteScript 2.1, and support for older versions is expected to be discontinued.
There is still time to prepare. However, the amount of work required will vary between NetSuite accounts.
By starting now, you can assess the scope of the work and plan the transition alongside other investments and development priorities, rather than having to manage everything as the deadline approaches.
The transition is not just a technical requirement. It is also an opportunity to gain better visibility into your existing customizations, evaluate which ones are still needed, and determine how they should be managed going forward.
How much work is involved?
This depends on how many scripts you have and which SuiteScript versions they were written in.
Some scripts may only require minor changes and testing. Others may need more extensive modifications or complete rewrites.
There may also be code owned by third-party vendors that needs to be handled by those providers. In addition, older scripts may still exist in your account even though they are no longer in use.
To plan effectively, you need to understand:
- Which scripts are affected?
- What needs to be done with them?
- How extensive is the work?
- Are there any third-party vendors that need to be involved?
- How much time, budget, and internal resources should we allocate?
- How should the changes be tested?
Only once you have this overview can you create a realistic upgrade plan.
A structured first step with SuiteCorner
To make it easier to identify what needs to be done, SuiteCorner has developed an analysis tool that reviews all your scripts in a highly efficient and structured way.
The results are compiled into a report that provides a clear overview of which scripts are written in SuiteScript 1.0, 2.0, and 2.x, along with the actions required for each script.
The scripts are divided into three categories:
Recertify: Scripts where a minor version change and technical verification may be sufficient.
Repair: Scripts that need to be modified to work with SuiteScript 2.1.
Rewrite: Older scripts that require more extensive rewriting, for example, scripts written in SuiteScript 1.0.
For scripts that require action, you will also receive an estimate of the time needed. The assessment is based on factors such as script version, type, and complexity, combined with our experience in NetSuite development.
The report also includes code owned by third-party vendors and scripts that appear to be unused. This helps you identify what needs to be handled internally, what may be the responsibility of an external provider, and what may not need upgrading at all.
The result is a practical foundation for planning timelines, resources, and budgets before making decisions about the upgrade itself.
If you would like to see what the report looks like, we would be happy to show you an example during an initial meeting.
What happens after the analysis?
Once the analysis is complete, we review the report together. We explain what the findings mean, which areas should be prioritized, and what the next steps could look like.
You then decide how you would like to proceed. The upgrade can be carried out internally, together with SuiteCorner, or with another partner.
If you choose SuiteCorner, we can also help update or rewrite the affected scripts and perform technical testing.
You do not need to commit to the entire upgrade project from the beginning. The analysis is a clearly defined first step that provides the information you need to make informed decisions about what comes next.
Testing is an essential part of the process
Updating the code is only one part of the work. Scripts also need to be tested to ensure they function as intended.
This is particularly important for customizations that affect business-critical processes, such as order management, invoicing, or financial workflows.
AI can help streamline parts of the coding process, but updated code still needs to be reviewed and tested. That is why technical testing of the affected scripts is included when SuiteCorner carries out the upgrade work.
End-to-end testing of business processes also needs to be planned. This can be performed by your internal team or with support from SuiteCorner under a separate agreement.
Start by understanding your current situation
The transition to SuiteScript 2.1 does not mean you need to launch a major upgrade project immediately.
The first step is to understand what currently exists in your NetSuite account and what actions are required.
With SuiteCorner’s structured analysis package, you receive a clear basis for decision-making, helping you assess the scope of work, plan budgets and resources, and prioritize activities well in advance.
